Reading Girls Jets 3 v 0 Caversham AFC
Reading Jets bounced back from dropping 2 points last week with a fine win over closest rivals Caversham AFC. Reading Jets started the game with 11 players but finished with only 9 and if Caversham had elected to play 11-a-side this week they could have found themselves with two extra players!!
Jets have been decimated by injury and illness so far this year and had 4 players out for this one, with others still recovering, two of which were unable to finish the game.
Reading got back to winning ways with a fine goal after plenty of pressure when Jade Hearmon slotted home to make it 1 - 0. Jets continued to push and with the girls being shuffled round this week gave Caversham a few different problems as Sarah Thompson and Tara Magee led the line. Sarah Thompson was called on to take a penalty after the ball was handled in the area. Sarah’s shot was parried by the keeper but Sarah followed in and scored from the rebound to make it 2 - 0.
Alice Cartwright, Sophie Gibbons and Hannah (Bobby) John held firm at the back clearing anything back up field. Vicky Burr gathered well when she was called on and did superbly well with her goal kicks.
The second half saw much of the same with Jets holding possession for long periods and restricting Caversham to a couple of long range efforts. Reading Jets really should have put this way beyond doubt but with some good keeping and it being one of those days in front of goal, Caversham found themselves going in to the last 10mins, still in with a chance and nearly snatched a goal back but a combination of April Charlton and Alice Cartwright for Jets, gathered the ball and sent it back up field. After countless corners, Sophie Farrell sent in yet another one and when the ball came back out wide to her she thumped it over the defence and keeper in to the roof of the net making it 3 - 0 and finishing the scoring off. Well done girls for getting back to playing football after last week.
