That’s The Wey To Do It!
Aye Carumba! Sunday’s here again and we’re already a quarter of the way through a splendid season. This morning we gave a big Blues’ nice to see you, to see you nice welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Wey Valley, a team whose results so far this term suggest they have developed a resilience to their game.
Blues had to keep their focus and mental fortitude, especially after conceding an early goal. For lesser teams this could so easily have turned into a Rodney, you plonker sort of performance. Blues, though, are made of sterner stuff. Don’t panic, don’t panic, was the order of the day as the girls turned on the style to produce a thumbs up, fandabidozi display of attacking football.
We were soon on level terms. Katie won the ball in the middle of the park, her pass found Alice who slotted through Sophie, the latter shrugging off a challenge to complete a powerful run with a clinical finish. One a piece; cushty!
Sophie then turned provider; getting behind Wey’s defence she crossed the ball into the danger area and yabbadabadoo Beth made it two!
Soon after, Blues put together a move involving four outfield players that saw the ball move from left to right and back again. Oh Mr. Rodgers, why weren’t you there to see what you could have won if only you’d adopt our style of play? Sophie crossed from the left to Beth. Beth, finding her way to goal blocked, knocked the ball to Alice on the right. Alice, on the dead-ball line, passed back to Georgia who crossed to Sophie and goal! I love it when a plan comes together!
Georgia almost made it four moments later, her shot dipping over the crossbar. We didn’t have to wait long, though. Alice hit an up and under which Wey’s keeper could only parry. Ever alert Sophie pounced on the loose ball to complete a well-deserved, lovely jubbly, first-half hattrick.
Howz about that then, boys and girls? Four-one up at the break and the promise of thirty more minutes fantastic football to follow. Super, smashing, great!
The second half was equally exciting. Tayla saw a fine effort saved; she then linked well with Victoria and Georgia. Victoria almost increased Blues' lead, but Wey's keeper just managed to finger-tip the ball away. Tayla then linked well with Beth and Alice to force another corner.
Georgia and Katie interchanged with the midfield and so contributed to the relentless Blue surge, searching for a fifth goal, but let's not forget our constants in defence, namely Jemima and Niamh. The attack would falter if it wasn't for a strong and solid foundation; their effort and concentration to remain focused, to halt Wey in their tracks, and to distribute the ball quickly and cleanly was a pivotal part to Blues' success.
With ten minutes left on the clock, Wey's resistance finally crumbled. Georgia, winning the ball on the halfway line, threaded through to Alice. Her cross found Beth in the area and cowabunga! Beth doubled her morning's tally.
Moments later, Wey's keeper thwarted Katie's superb effort, and as Sophie pounced on the rebound, Blues' supporters lifted their arms and raised their voices in anticipated celebration, but I don't believe it, Wey's keeper saved heroically at point blank range.
Blues, strong to the finish cos they eat their spinach, still had time for one more goal. Another break down the right, another cross from Alice, and Sophie rounded off a brilliant personal display by netting her fourth.
So as the referee, who was a thoroughly nice bloke, announced, “That’s all folks,” the scores on the doors read Blues 6 Wey Valley 1. "Good game, good game," greeted the teams as they left the field of play (oh come on, you knew that one was coming).
And finally, let's give it up for the girls of Reading Blues and Wey Valley. They all played the game in good spirit and with amazing grace.
Didn't they do well!
