Clarke Kent, ace reporter for the Daily Globe, has discovered a new breed of never say die hero called Reading Girls’ Blues.
Taking into consideration the average age and height, our Wondergirls have consistently packed a punch far above their weight and this was never more so than on Sunday.
Fleet came to town boasting an impressive record of thirteen straight wins, scoring an average of seven goals per game. Whilst Blues lost the ensuing game 2-0, each and every girl can take immense pride in a collective performance that saw the league leaders, a side with no less than four players in the league representative team, record their worst result of the season.
A goal in each half settled the game, but that does not tell the tale of tenacity and inventiveness, of courage and determination, of battling valour and downright stubbornness that thwarted and frustrated the league leaders throughout sixty minutes of great entertainment.
Captain Katie was like an ironman, Niamh and Georgia both displayed the strength of hercules, Sophie and Alice were like the flash. Lisa, our very on spiderman, protected her net with brave agility. Beth, like a bionic woman, gave her all, whilst Jimmy and Victoria were the fantastic four rolled up in two.
What the rest of the season holds, no-one can judge. Dread we need not. Fear we can banish. Timidity we can laugh at. Marvel we can at our skill, our resilience, the shear poetry of our flowing game.
I applaud you all.
Next week we host Frimley. Let’s put right the result of a few weeks ago. Play on you Blues and give them hell boy!
Lisa, Georgia, Niamh, Katie, Sophie, Alice, Beth Jimmy, Victoria
