Nought to sixty in a blink of an eye, all cylinders firing and pistons pounding the crankshaft, Blues were truly in top gear this weekend as they played host to Petersfield.
Blues accelerator was stuck on fast forward; unlike Toyota, this model is not subject to a product recall. Alice, a lively right-wing spark-plug, danced to the hum of a quick allegro and was too hot for the visitors to handle. Even a missed penalty, bravely awarded, which struck an upright (apparently the goal had not been correctly positioned) left her undaunted as she whipped in cross after cross.
Petersfield managed a counter attack and Lisa pulled off a terrific save to stop the league newcomers taking an unexpected lead. On the whole though, the visitors were on the back pedal with their reverse lights permanently switched on. Sophie, Tayla, Alice and Georgia were all tantalizingly close. Only the courage and acrobatics of Petersfield's goalkeeper kept the scores even as the teams head off for the interval.
Who'd leave the pit stop first?
Jimmy was called upon to fender off an attack and Niamh was quick to put the skids on any movement down the left-hand side. Katie surged forward like bluebird on Coniston Water at every opportunity.
How long could Peterfield hold out? They were skidding and sliding, out of control, and their airbag finally burst when Sophie crossed for Victoria to shoot home.
The pressure off, Blues were able to express a more cavalier attitude and Victoria soon made it two. Our midfield maestro Sophie then made it three when she collected the ball from a poorly taken goal kick.
Following a goal mouth scramble, Beth scored the forth and shortly afterwards a resurgent Tayla added a fifth.
The six goal is worthy of its own paragraph and is an early contender for goal of the season. A great corner from Georgia found player of the match Victoria in the box and she hammered home a tremendous shot to complete her hat-trick.
This was another superb triumph and in football's troubled times, when many a professional star tarnishes the great game both on and off the field, our girls can stand tall and acclaim themselves the sport's true ambassadors.
It may be wishful thinking, but the league leaders are no longer a distant speck on the horizon. Can we catch them? Corsa we can! Come on you Blues!!!
